Fruit Sugars vs Refined Sugars: Why the Difference Matters
Did you know there are natural sugars in the majority of food we eat? From dairy products to vegetables, these products have sugar in them even if sugar hasn’t been added!
Refined sugars are also known as white sugar, brown sugar or cane sugar to name a few. These sugars come from plants but have been processed so they are in their most simple & sweet form. Refined sugars are commonly added to foods to make them taste nicer or to help extend their shelf life. Unlike fruit sugars, these refined sugars lack any nutritional value. High refined sugar intakes are linked to many conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease so trying to cut down on these refined sugars is super important!
Fruit sugars are naturally occurring and contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants. Many fruits are rich in fibre, which slows down the body’s absorption process. This means you will feel fuller for longer unlike refined sugars which will leave you reaching for the biscuit tin all afternoon!
Like any sugar, too much fruit sugar can be bad for you. But in comparison to refined sugars, it is definitely more beneficial for your insides. The key to any diet is moderation, so if you’re craving something sweet, you’re better off reaching for a piece of fruit or a bottle of our cold-pressed juice than a bar of chocolate! It will keep you fuller for longer as well as giving you plenty of vitamins and antioxidants.
