Understanding Antioxidants

You've seen the word on juice bottles, skincare labels and supplement tubs for years. But what does "packed with antioxidants" actually mean and more importantly, why should you care? Let's break it down without the science-lecture jargon.

The Villains: Free Radicals

Every day, your body produces tiny unstable molecules called free radicals. They're a totally normal by-product of everyday life, breathing, exercising, digesting food, but they're also created (in much larger numbers) by things like sun exposure, pollution, stress, alcohol, and processed food.

Free radicals are missing an electron, which makes them unstable and reactive. To "fix" themselves, they steal electrons from healthy cells nearby, damaging those cells in the process. This is called oxidative stress, and over time it's linked to visible aging, tiredness, and a weaker immune system.

Think of free radicals as small sparks landing on your cells throughout the day. One spark here and there is manageable, but if sparks keep landing unchecked, they can smoulder into real damage or a real fire.

The Heroes: Antioxidants

This is where antioxidants come in. Antioxidants are molecules that can safely donate an electron to a free radical, neutralising it before it damages a cell, without becoming unstable themselves.

Picture antioxidants as your body's fire extinguishers: on standby, ready to put out sparks the moment they appear, stopping them from spreading into something worse. Or think of them as bodyguards, patrolling your bloodstream, stepping in front of trouble before it reaches anything important.

The more antioxidants you have on patrol, the better protected your cells are.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

This isn't just abstract cell biology, the knock-on effects show up in ways you can actually notice:

  • Skin: Sun exposure and pollution generate free radicals in the skin, breaking down collagen and accelerating fine lines and dullness. Antioxidants like vitamin C help defend skin cells against this damage, supporting a firmer, more even-looking complexion over time.

  • Immune function: Your immune cells work harder, and produce more free radicals when you're fighting off bugs. Nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc support normal immune function, which is part of why a diet rich in fruit and veg is linked with fewer sick days over the colder months.

  • Energy & recovery: Intense exercise creates a surge of free radicals in muscle tissue. Polyphenol antioxidants (found in berries, cherries and pomegranate) have been studied for their role in reducing exercise-induced muscle soreness, helping you bounce back faster.

  • Long-term cell health: Chronic, unchecked oxidative stress is associated with faster cellular ageing. Keeping antioxidant levels topped up is one small, daily way to support your body's natural defenses.

Being completely honest, it’s important to realise that antioxidants aren't a magic shield, and no juice will undo a week of poor sleep or a heavy sunburn. But as part of a balanced lifestyle, they're a genuinely evidence-backed piece of the puzzle.

Where Do Antioxidants Come From?

The best source is simple: colourful fruit and veg. As a rough rule, the deeper and brighter the colour, the more antioxidant compounds it likely contains, think dark berries, orange turmeric, deep green kale, red pomegranate. "Eating the rainbow" isn't just a nice phrase, it's a genuinely useful way to think about antioxidant variety, since different colours tend to bring different types of antioxidant compounds.

How B.fresh Can Help

One of the easiest ways to get more antioxidant-rich produce into a busy day is through cold-pressed juices and shots, because cold-pressing extracts the nutrients from fruit and veg without heat, which helps preserve more of what's naturally there.

Shots: A quick, concentrated hit of antioxidant-rich ingredients:

Juices & Smoothies: A bigger, more rounded serving of fruit and veg:

  • Shine packed with antioxidants to help protect cells and skin from daily damage

  • Recover full of polyphenols, studied for reducing muscle damage and soreness

  • Radiant supports healthy digestion and immune function

  • Gut Health Berries beneficial bacteria, prebiotics and polyphenols in one bottle

Practical Recommendations

You don't need to overhaul your diet overnight. A few simple habits go a long way:

  1. Eat the rainbow: Aim for at least a few different colours of fruit and veg on your plate each day.

  2. Use a daily shot or juice as a top-up, not a replacement: They're a convenient way to close the gap on busy days, not a substitute for whole fruit and veg.

  3. Protect what you're building: Antioxidants work best alongside the basics: enough sleep, less processed food, moderate alcohol and some daily movement. These all reduce how many free radicals your body has to deal with in the first place.

  4. Be consistent, not perfect: Antioxidant protection is cumulative, a daily habit beats an occasional big effort.

Small, consistent choices add up. A daily shot or juice is one of the easiest ones to make.
