The Devil Is In The Dosage

Turmeric, that bright orange spice commonly used in Indian cuisine is most certainly on-trend and for very good reason.

In ancient ayurvedic medicine the ‘golden spice’ is used to treat numerous ailments from arthritis to digestive issues. Turmeric contains numerous bioactive compounds, or polyphenols, that provide protection to cells along with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Particular attention is paid to the polyphenol curcumin.

Curcumin is found within turmeric and is often considered the star of the show. Recent evidence has suggested, fairly convincingly, that regular consumption of curcumin can reduce markers of inflammation and increase antioxidant protection within the body. As such curcumin at dosages between 1000 - 1500 mg per day can be used to alleviate conditions such as chronic pain and depression, while also helping athletes recover faster and feel less sore after intense exercise.

However, it is important to note that this research has studied the effects of curcumin, not turmeric on health markers. Turmeric is undoubtedly a nice addition to the diet, but its benefits come from these bioactive polyphenols, such as curcumin. The curcumin content of turmeric is somewhere between 3 - 5%. As mentioned previously the optimal daily dose of curcumin is believed to be around 1000 - 1500 mg, with some studies even going as high as 5000 mg.

That means that 1 heaped teaspoon of turmeric powder, roughly 6 grams (6000 mg), only provides around 190 mg of curcumin. At B.Fresh we recognise and appreciate the complexities of nutrition science, such that we invest time and effort into researching not only effective ingredients, but also optimal dosages. We pride ourselves on the fact that we have one of the most potent turmeric shots on the market in the UK. It may cost us more to produce and refine, but rest assured that our customers' health is at the forefront of our thinking when we develop new products.

Both our Turmeric Immunity and Turmeric Boost shots contain 49 grams of high quality turmeric. This equates to 1550 mg of curcumin per shot, to align with the current scientific research.

When you are considering your next turmeric shot please remember that the devil is in the dosage.
